End-of-Life Care

We know how hard it is to say goodbye to a cherished family member. When that time comes, our caring team will be here to support you and make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible for both you and your pet.

What kind of support is available for pets nearing the end of their life?

We know every pet parent wishes their furry friend could stay forever. But when the time comes to say goodbye, the most loving choice is often the one that brings them peace and comfort. At TVS, we understand how hard this can be and are here to support you with compassion and care. As your pet gets older, we may suggest more frequent visits and small changes to help them stay happy and comfortable for as long as possible.

What signs should I look for to know my pet’s quality of life is declining?

It’s never easy to know when it’s time to say goodbye. If your pet’s daily life is affected by age or illness, our vets are here to help you make a plan that gives you as much time together as possible while keeping your pet comfortable. We’ll also share ways to make those last days, weeks, or months extra special and full of love.

Can I stay by my pet’s side while they’re being put down?

The choice is entirely up to you. Many pets feel calmer when their owner is close by, and many people find comfort in being there to say goodbye. But if it feels too emotional to stay, that’s okay too. We’ll give you a quiet space to take a moment for yourself. Your pet will always be treated with kindness and care—they’ll never be alone. Before the procedure, you’ll have time in a private room to say your goodbyes and give them a few last cuddles.

What vaccinations does my pet need and when?

A quality of life assessment helps us understand how your pet is feeling as they get older or manage ongoing health issues. As part of a wellness exam, we look at things like movement, pain, dental health, emotional wellbeing, and weight changes to see how comfortable they are. If we notice signs that your pet might be struggling, we’ll talk through options for keeping them comfortable and guide you with compassion through any difficult decisions.

How will my vet make sure my pet’s passing is peaceful?

Euthanasia allows your pet to pass peacefully, without pain or fear. It’s a gentle, humane way to say goodbye and is the most common option when it’s time to help your pet find comfort and rest.

How does euthanasia help my pet pass away peacefully?

When it’s time to say goodbye, we start by giving your pet a gentle sedative that helps them relax and feel calm. It’s given through a small syringe and is completely painless. Once your pet is peacefully resting, we’ll place an IV for the euthanasia medication. Within a few minutes, they’ll drift off quietly and pass away without pain or fear.

Afterward, you’ll have as much private time as you need to say goodbye. You can also talk with us about cremation or burial options whenever you’re ready. We’re here to make things as gentle and stress-free as possible for both you and your pet.

What can I do with my pet’s remains after they pass?

Our veterinary care team can guide you through your options and take care of the necessary arrangements on your behalf. You’re welcome to discuss your wishes with us ahead of time so everything is in place before your pet’s visit.

Will my other pets notice or react when one of them passes away?

Pets grieve too. After losing a companion, they might seem sad, restless, confused, sleeping more or less, eating differently, or looking around for their friend. Our vet team is here to help you understand what’s normal and offer suggestions to make things easier, like setting new routines or trying gentle calming sprays.
