Why regular vet checkups matter for dogs and cats

Pets age much faster than we do, and they’re experts at hiding discomfort. A dog or cat can look perfectly fine while dental disease, weight changes, or early kidney trouble quietly develops. A checkup once a year for most adult pets, and more often for puppies, kittens, and seniors, gives your veterinarian the chance to spot those changes early, when they’re easier to manage and far less stressful for everyone. It also builds a healthy baseline for your pet, so anything new stands out, and it’s your time to ask everything you’ve been meaning to ask.

What’s included in a pet wellness exam

A checkup at TVS is a complete physical and a real conversation, not a quick once-over. During your pet’s wellness exam, your veterinarian will:

  • Examine your dog or cat nose to tail: eyes, ears, mouth and teeth, skin and coat, heart and lungs, abdomen, joints, and weight
  • Review diet, behaviour, and lifestyle, and talk through anything you’ve noticed at home
  • Update any vaccines that are due, tailored to your pet’s lifestyle
  • Check parasite protection and recommend prevention that fits
  • Recommend bloodwork or urinalysis when it’s genuinely useful, especially for senior pets
  • Answer your questions with honest advice, and no pressure

You’ll leave knowing exactly how your pet is doing and what, if anything, needs attention.

Checkups for every life stage

Puppy and kitten checkups

Your puppy or kitten’s first vet visit kicks off the busiest stretch of their care: a vaccine series every few weeks, deworming and parasite checks, growth and nutrition guidance, and a plan for spay or neuter timing. We map the whole schedule at that first checkup and answer every new-pet question along the way. No question is too small.

Adult dog and cat checkups

For most healthy adults, a yearly checkup keeps vaccines current, weight on track, and teeth monitored, and it catches the quiet changes pets are so good at hiding. It’s also where we fine-tune diet, behaviour, and parasite prevention as your pet’s life changes.

Senior pet checkups

Pets age quickly in their later years, so we often recommend checkups every six months for seniors, along with routine bloodwork to stay ahead of kidney, thyroid, joint, and dental changes. The goal is simple: comfort, mobility, and more good years together.

Common questions  about
Pet Wellness & Checkups

Owners trust us with the animals they love, and we don’t take that lightly.

How often should I take my dog or cat to the vet?

Once a year for most healthy adult dogs and cats. Puppies and kittens visit more often through their first months for their vaccine series and growth checks, and we often recommend twice-yearly checkups for seniors and pets with ongoing conditions, since health can change quickly in later years. If you’re not sure where your pet lands, call us and we’ll tell you.

What does a vet checkup include?

A nose-to-tail physical exam: heart, lungs, eyes, ears, mouth and teeth, skin, coat, abdomen, joints, and weight, plus a review of diet, behaviour, vaccines, and parasite prevention. If anything deserves a closer look, we’ll explain why and what we recommend, including bloodwork when it’s genuinely useful.

Does my pet really need a checkup if they seem healthy?

Yes, and that’s exactly when it’s most useful. Pets instinctively hide illness, so problems like dental disease, weight creep, or early kidney trouble often show no signs at home. A checkup catches them early, when they’re easier to manage, keeps vaccines current, and gives us a healthy baseline to compare against as your pet ages.

Does my indoor cat need checkups too?

Yes. Even the most pampered indoor cat can develop weight gain, dental disease, hormone changes, or hidden lumps, and cats are masters at disguising pain. Regular checkups catch those quietly developing problems, and indoor cats still need their core vaccines, including rabies, which Ontario law requires whether they go outside or not.

How should I prepare for my pet’s vet visit?

If you’re new to us, email any past medical records to your clinic ahead of the visit (TorontoNorth@tvshospitals.com or Parliament@tvshospitals.com). For a first appointment, a fresh stool sample in a sealed bag or small container is helpful if you can manage it. Cats travel safest in a carrier and dogs on a leash, treats are welcome, and if you’ve noticed anything different at home, even something small, mention it. Those details matter.
